Coinbase is the most straightforward place for a US beginner to buy crypto. It is publicly traded, regulated, and the interface is the cleanest in the industry. The catch is cost: the simple buy button charges several percent, while the Advanced interface on the same account charges a fraction of that.

Open a Coinbase account and complete your first purchase. Verification usually takes a few minutes.
Open an accountReferral disclosure. The link above is a referral link. If you sign up through it, Orca Crypto may receive a commission at no additional cost to you, and in some cases you receive a bonus as well. This does not change what we write. We list the drawbacks of every platform on this page, and we would tell you the same things over a coffee.
What Coinbase is
Coinbase is a US publicly traded company listed on Nasdaq, which means audited financials and regulatory scrutiny that most crypto platforms do not face. It is available in every US state, supports hundreds of assets, and holds the large majority of customer crypto in cold storage.
For a beginner the appeal is simple: it works, it is legal, and the interface does not assume you already know what a limit order is.
The fees, and the trap
This is the part worth reading twice. Coinbase runs two interfaces on one account, and they cost very different amounts.
| Interface | Typical cost on a $500 buy | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Simple buy button | Roughly $7 to $20 all in, spread included | One click, no learning curve |
| Coinbase Advanced | Roughly $0 to $3 | Order book, limit orders, maker and taker pricing |
Setting it up
Sign up and secure the account
Use a unique password and enable two factor authentication immediately. Choose an authenticator app or a hardware key, not SMS.
Verify your identity
Photo ID, a selfie and your details. Required by US law. Usually approved within minutes.
Link a bank account
ACH transfer, not a debit card. Card purchases add several percent for no benefit.
Make a small first purchase
Twenty dollars of Bitcoin or Ethereum. The point is completing the loop, not the position.
Withdraw a little to your own wallet
Send five dollars worth to a self custody wallet. Withdrawing over Base costs almost nothing.
Honest assessment
Strengths
What it does genuinely well
- Publicly traded, audited and regulated in all 50 states
- The cleanest onboarding in crypto, by a clear margin
- Advanced interface has competitive fees once you switch
- Native withdrawals to Base cost a fraction of a cent
- Coinbase Wallet is a solid separate self custody app
Weaknesses
What to know before you commit
- The simple buy button is expensive, and it is the default
- Customer support has a long history of complaints, especially on account access
- Accounts can be frozen during reviews, which is true of every regulated exchange
- Fewer trading pairs than offshore platforms, which is a regulatory consequence
- Not your keys. An exchange balance is a claim, not an asset you hold
How safe is it
Coinbase holds most customer crypto in cold storage and carries commercial crime insurance on the portion in hot wallets. USD balances are held in custodial accounts with FDIC pass through eligibility up to standard limits. Crypto itself is not FDIC insured, and no exchange balance ever is.
The honest framing: Coinbase is among the safest custodial options available to a US customer, and custodial still means someone else holds your keys. Use it to buy, and move meaningful holdings to self custody.
Common questions
Is Coinbase safe?
As custodial exchanges go, it is one of the safest available to US customers: publicly traded, audited, regulated and mostly cold stored. That is not the same as your own wallet, and long term holdings belong in self custody.
Why is Coinbase so expensive?
The simple interface is. The Advanced interface on the same account is competitive with anyone. Most people never discover the difference, which is why we mention it three times.
What is the difference between Coinbase and Coinbase Wallet?
Coinbase is the exchange, and it holds your keys. Coinbase Wallet is a separate self custody app where you hold them. Two products, two balances, and a common source of confusion.
Can I withdraw to my own wallet?
Yes, and you should. Withdrawing over Base or Solana costs almost nothing compared to Ethereum mainnet.
